A literal and figurative drunk farce about a grotesque wedding. The film only has disfigured, bold characters and vulgar humour. Far from my thing.

With Wesele, director and writer Wojciech Smarzowski produces a temporal and biting allegory about the human drive for corruption, fraud, conspiracy and favoritism. The place of action is a wedding party where, according to good Polish custom, the alcohol flows freely. While the ballroom and the drunken games begin in the ballroom, shadowy affairs are being handled in the back rooms.

Smarzowski stages his sketch of morality with a calculating frenzy. Wesele (which by the way means wedding) consists of chaotic scenes, but as a viewer you know how to separate the wheat from the chaff. The action that matters is always recognizable in the melee of people and events. While watching I did not drown in a multitude of confusing situations. Although a lot happens in Wesele and there is a lot to see, the film looks amazingly structured. Excellent acting is an important anchor point in a chaotic film and fortunately the actors in Wesele do an excellent job of that.

The biting spot is easy to recognize. The exaggerated prejudices of the wedding guests, as well as the exposure of human vices, succeed very well. The film is probably good as a parody of Polish society. You may have to be of Polish origin to get the humor. The humor seemed very farcical and noisy to me. I didn't like it much. I actually didn't laugh. The directing is good. The acting is good. However, the story and humor did not really grab me.
