Netflix has made a genius move by buying Ghibli movies. This keeps them by far the best streaming service.

Now I haven't seen all the Ghibli movies yet, so I can get started with the rest in the coming months.

This classic was the first to get a viewing. Of course I watched the movie in Japanese. I've noticed with Nefflix and anime that the subs are based on the Japanese dub, so it's confusing that the dubs and subs don't match.

Well, the movie itself. It's really amazing that there's 1989 behind the movie, because you definitely don't see that in the movie. Everything is beautifully animated. The film has certainly stood the test of time. Kiki's Delivery Service is small in scope and big in heart. The advantage is that the film is very sympathetic and you are constantly watching with a smile. The downside is that the whole thing feels a bit out of control and I miss an end goal in the film that it wants to work towards. The ending also feels a bit abrupt and I don't really feel like Kiki really had to overcome anything. Losing her witch powers is really the film's only dilemma.

Conclusion: Kiki's Delivery Service is a small and visually beautiful film with a big heart, but it lacks a clear purpose and lacks a real suspense.

Happy Ghibli.

This movie has a wonderful vibe. Always love it when it's an animation where there is no enemy. Also in this one there is very little danger on the road, but it does get to you because it has those nice everyday problems with a fantasy sauce. When she loses her mojo and the girl from the woods tells you to get some rest and then it will come back is such a relevant feel good message that you rarely see in screaming animations.

4 stars.

Remains great.

There are those films that sink into the memory after a while, but which always rejoice when reviewed. This is one of those. There's little drama in it, the film doesn't have too many great moments or very striking characters, but that's just part of its strength.

A film without major drama that nevertheless intrigues, but above all makes you happy. Miyazaki's world is one where people support each other, are inherently good and where everything will work out, without making an explicit point or moral lesson out of it. And that is wonderful to see.

Visually, it also remains strong, especially as Miyazaki's eye for small details is second to none. Soundtrack also beautiful, characters are sweet and touching and the tempo is perfect. A great film to re-discover a bit over and over again.
