"The search for life is about to end."

On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a Tantalus Base crew member believes he has discovered something extraordinary, namely fossilized evidence of bacterial life. However, he has no intention of sharing the discovery with the rest and decides to go after more evidence on his own. But then the ground collapses beneath his feet and he falls into a deep crevice. The rest of the group is devastated by this and starts looking for him diligently, but then suddenly more people disappear. Slowly the realization comes that the discovered life form is still alive and also dangerous.

A zombiefilm that starts rather slowly, quite cliché and predictable, but also quite entertaining in itself. The biggest shortcoming is the enormous lack of originality and the meager and average story. In terms of images I would have estimated this film to be 10 years older, in that respect it is not special either. Nice, but very average. 2.5*

The exploration of Mars ends in disaster when a wayward crew member [Goran Kostic] makes a discovery that threatens the lives of all the expedition members. Genre calculators already know what time it is and will recognize elements from many well-known SF thrillers. It is therefore not original, but smooth direction and decent acting performances are enough to satisfy the not too critical viewer.

The heroes in The Last Days on Mars discover that Mars is not only a desolate wasteland with sandstorms and icy nights, but also a form of life. Of course that is a form of life that does not benefit humans. The film offers a thin story that deals with this fact and is half of it involved in a wild chase between zombies and survivors. And of course the survivors stumble through the setting very carelessly and irresponsibly in order to prolong the story and give the zombies a fair chance to conquer. How sporty.

What a story! Anyone who expects a story that contains delicious horror and is full of surprises will be deeply disappointed. It doesn't really matter. The Last Days on Mars is a failed attempt to connect the horror genre with the sci-fi genre. Too tame for a horror film, the film offers little besides a sad Martian landscape and a futuristic laboratory-like setting that is worthy of sci-fi.

The only thing in which the film succeeds well is in creating an oppressive atmosphere. That atmosphere is not created by the threat or by plot technical complications. That atmosphere is created by the excellent set design, which in particular conjures up a beautiful landscape. And in the midst of that fine setting, everything (predictable story, flat characters, unbalanced camera work) works just a little better than it really is. And that's still mediocre.
