Fanny Brice (1891–1951) was a Jewish-American singer, dancer, and comedienne whose humor and energy could seemingly never be satisfactorily captured on celluloid, and her film career was consequently limited to six or seven titles. In Be yourself!, we can at least catch a glimpse of her dynamic personality, for although the plot is nothing special, her scenes with her on-screen brother Harry Green, including fast-paced overlapping dialogue and affectionate bickering, remain entertaining. I have seen Robert Armstrong’s drunken stick so many times by now that it seems as if he is still slightly tipsy even sober, and apart from Gertrude Astor (366 film credits between 1915 and 1966 according to IMDb) as the voluptuous Lil (what's in a name), the supporting roles remain anonymous. In short, a lighthearted comedy that is especially worthwhile if you want to see the Fanny Brice phenomenon with your own eyes (and perhaps to compare her appearance with Barbra Streisand's portrayal in Funny girl (1968) and Funny lady (1975)).
