Gravity plot

"Don't let go."

dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer who embarks on her first shuttle mission with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who commands his final flight before retiring. But a seemingly routine spacewalk ends in disaster. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski alone - chained to each other and floating further and further in the dark. The deafening silence betrays that they have lost all connection to Earth...and any chance of rescue. Fear turns into panic, and every breath of air reduces the amount of oxygen left. But perhaps the only way home is to continue into the terrifying expanse of space.

“Houston, I have a bad feeling about this mission.”

Visually otherworldly, a strong heroine and at times nail-bitingly exciting. Gravity is one long survival journey by Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a biomedical engineer who, after being ambushed by flying debris with Matt Kowalski (Clooney), must survive in a life-threatening situation.

It's actually hopping from space station to space station and from shuttle to shuttle, but director Alfonso Cuarón knows how to convey the constant tension and pressure that the characters feel in a beautiful way. Stone is not an experienced astronaut and has her emotions a little less under control than the hardened Kowalski. Bullock knows how to play the panic well, but Stone is also inventive and a very fast learner. The images of space and especially the earth are breathtaking and Cuarón deserves all the credit for this. He has been working on this project for years and the result is overwhelming. The plot around Stone's deceased son was not for me and feels a bit forced. At the end Cuarón allows himself some improbabilities, but at that moment you are already completely wrapped up by the film so that it does not disturb for a moment. Gravity is a blood-curdling space adventure that continues to fascinate, even because of its short duration.

The visual effects are fantastic. The image that the space is unfriendly to people is also correct. We as humans can hardly survive there. The slightest thing is deadly. But from a physical point of view, there is a lot of rattle. Wandering tools destroy the equipment and so will never happen. If you have the same speed in space, you will keep it. If Kowalski is let go by Stone, he can't float away from her. The rocket engines are apparently turned on at random times and can never have the effect that the film suggests. When Stone maneuvers towards the Chinese spaceship with a fire extinguisher, the use of the fire extinguisher makes no sense. If he blows up one way, you'll go the other way.

And it actually lacks a story. And when it comes to the space debris, it is very sudden and therefore unrealistic.

I know it's just a story, but don't go crazy. And what did he get all those Oscars for?

For me, the film effortlessly survives on TV: the film is exciting from start to finish and is also full of beautiful and moving moments. The film also nicely links two rather contradictory themes: on the one hand the current problem of space debris and on the other hand our ancient (but mainly modern) fear of the immensity of the (otherwise unlivable) universe that makes the Earth and man insignificant and an immeasurable gives a feeling of loneliness, but which conversely also makes that puny Earth so valuable. Four to four and a half stars.
