A reasonable film, which in my opinion is more thriller than horror, but that is debatable.

The beginning is slow, with very little dialogue and it is mainly the horrific images that speak. This is about the girl Angel, whom we slowly but surely get to know better through flashbacks. Although her life is far from good, compared to the other women in the brothel, she's not that bad.

I have to say that I'm a bit done with that brown/yellow color filter. That is used too often in these kinds of films and gives it a cheap look, instead of a realistic one. Everything else remains quite tame until the last half hour. The pace then picks up and although the ending doesn't come as a surprise, the road to it is still quite entertaining.

It is a pity that there is very little tension. It also seems quite simple for Angel to escape earlier, because that brothel was not properly secured either. Oh well, it looked nice, but it's not exactly scary, exciting or innovative.

The deaf-mute Angel [Robin Day] has been captured by some mercenaries and now works as a slave in a place where other teenage girls are drugged, raped and beaten up. Her deafness helps her keep her distance from the girls she cares for, until she meets a girl who can also speak sign language. That leads to her decision to escape at all costs and try to end the horrors she faces every day.

The lack of characterization and the seemingly never-ending stream of rapes and related matters is stultifying. Paul Hyett tries to remedy this by making the violence increasingly extreme and explicit, but that only backfires. Anyone is free to be disgusted by that violence, but the worst part is that there is no idea behind it. It's violence for the sake of violence performed by cartoonish, regularly over-acting villains, not least protagonist Sean Pertwee. A bleak, tasteless piece of work.

Disgusting film that for me absolutely does not have to rely on the visual because this film looked hideous to me. In addition, if this film was to provide a picture of the horrors of the wars (1992-1995) in the former Yugoslavia, you must of course ensure that you come up with a credible story. The reality was a bit different back then, I thought. But hey, it's just a movie, the director must have thought. Possibly, but it seems to me that the Serbs would not have been too happy with this film in which they were portrayed as bloodthirsty barbarians who burn and massacre entire villages and who only save young girls to have them work in a brothel. At least that's how I see it.
I found the most intense scene from the beginning, by the way; Viktor who, to set an example to the girls forced into prostitution , slit the throat of one of the girls. The ending - as unbelievable as that might be - I thought was quite beautiful. And Rosie Day in the role of Angel certainly did well.
