Mona Lisa Smile plot

"In a world that told them how to think, she showed them how to live."

In the fall of 1953, ambitious teacher Katherine Watson attends Wellesley College, one of the most prestigious girls' schools in the United States. She will be teaching art history there. However, it is difficult to adapt to her new environment. Her love for modern art and her strong opinion about the role of women in society are far from being appreciated by her conservative colleagues. Even with her students, Katherine is not always well received. However, the young teacher persists in her ideals and is not intimidated. She encourages her students to develop their own opinion and continue their studies instead of getting married right away. And in doing so, she goes against the tradition of the school.

Friendly. I don't really have a "women's only stove is the gas stove" mentality, so I do have a thing for the subject. I also like modern art, but especially with people who are passionate about a certain subject.

A very strong role from Dunst as a traditional thinking girl full of anger. Also a nice role for Roberts, but a bit typical for her. That's also a bit of the feeling I have afterwards. It all looks nice, but also feels safe. It's easy to sympathize with Roberts' character because she's so much closer to modern western people than the other characters. It would have been much more daring to show everything through the eyes of Dunst's character, for example.

Safe roads are also chosen in terms of cinematography. It all looks fine, but nothing more than that. Also a few pop songs in the soundtrack and you know that this movie "scores". I expect something more. 2.5*.

“Look beyond the paint. Let us try to open our minds to a new idea.”

Nice movie by Mike Newell. The story of Mona Lisa Smile is quite predictable and some characters are more like caricatures, but fortunately actresses like Roberts, Dunst, Stiles and Gyllenhaal know how to impress. Dusty and dull are words that sometimes apply to this film, and you know roughly where it is going from every storyline. Luckily, you can't go wrong with such actresses.

Mona Lisa Smile a film with a special arsenal of famous actors and a solid story. However, not for a large audience. At least you have to love it.
