Lang Leve de Koningin plot

"A fairytale about chess"

8-year-old Sara (Tiba Tossijn) is not happy. She doesn't know her father and school isn't going too well either. She thinks herself stupid until she discovers the wonderful world of chess through Victor, a young classmate. In her fantasy she disappears into the game where she befriends the white queen (Monique van de Ven) and the other pieces. In this way she playfully prevents war between the white and black realms and learns to play chess like the best.

Long Live The Queen is probably one of the best youth films ever made. A very nice story written and directed by Esmee Lammers. He once graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts with the film De Schaker en de Dame, and just like in that film, the game 'chess' plays an important role in Long Live De Koningin.

However, do not expect a film with an educational undertone. The rules of chess are explained, but this is done in a very creative and fun way. The design of the film is beautiful with beautiful sets by Rikke Jelier & Roland Mylanus as well as very nice costumes by Linda Bogers. The acting is somewhat variable. The young Tiba Tossijn makes her feature film debut here and plays rather woodenly. Yet that is also her charm and as a viewer you are drawn into her fantasy world. The supporting roles are well filled by Jack Wouterse and Monique van de Ven as the White King and Queen, Rudolf Lucieer as the strict teacher, Derek de Lint as Sarah's father and Cas Enklaar as the White Carpet.

All this makes Long Live De Koningin an ultimate youth film that is suitable for both young and old.

Youth sentiment, this movie. Nice to see him on TV again yesterday after all these years. I used to like it, and it still fascinates me. 4.5*

Watched yesterday with teenage daughter. She believes that Dutch children's films are unsurpassed and I actually agree with her. Certainly in this case.
