NO had some really nice finds. For example, the tongue-in-cheek film work that the late '80s showed was very well done. Also, the acting, from most of the cast, made the movie very realistic. Although the film was very long and there was little flow in it, it never really became sleep-inducing. However, I was immensely irritated with Bernal. That's a personal thing; I've never been able to vent that man. All in all, the film painted an interesting picture of Chile. Starbright boy describes perhaps the biggest flaw of NO above, although I'm not sure he sees it as a negative. I may be old school, but I prefer beauty in a movie. And it is indeed, as he puts it, not to be found in this Larraín. Luckily the story was strong enough to get me over it.

Director Pablo Larraín enlisted more than 30 of the original campaigners from the 1988 No campaign [aimed at deposing Chilean dictator Pinochet] to play himself in this captivating, thrilling docudrama. Their presence enhances the credibility, but also the authenticity of this film, as well as the choice to film everything with 1980s video cameras. No! is therefore fascinating from start to finish, but between all the events, all the archive footage and spectacular campaign videos, it is a cast-iron rendition of Gael García Bernal who towers above everything and everyone and continues to remind us of the human aspect of this fantastic story. Unmissable, educational, not to mention highly entertaining.

My fourth film by Larraín in three months, and with good reason; I now consider him one of the most interesting directors of the moment. NO also worked well. The design immediately catches the eye and, in addition to evoking the atmosphere of the times, is reminiscent of Dogme (natural light, handheld camera, everything on location). Aesthetically it may not be so beautiful, but as a conscious choice of style I think it works very well here. It is also striking that Larraín knows how to focus well in a story. In this case you follow Rene Saveedra, you see the campaign and behind it the country (and the history of) Chile through his eyes. Especially the conflict between the applied tricks from the advertising world and the sincere emotions about the past comes out well. Because of this focus on a character, a lot is not told and this gives an extra lively element to the film, compared to the rounded stories that you often encounter. The final scene in the crowd is also beautiful. Nice discovery this director.
