High Hopes plot
This story offers a glimpse into the life of a nice average couple in London, Shirley and Cyril. And also in that of his mother, who is growing old quickly and increasingly forgetful, mother's nasty, above average neighbours, Cyril's haughty sister Valerie and her flirtatious husband. Shirley wants a baby, but Cyril, who reads Marx and wants a perfect world, is against it. Cyril's mother locks herself out and has to ask her snooty neighbors for help. Mother turns 70 and Valerie throws a party for her, which turns out to be a disaster from start to finish. Shirley tries to save the day, and she and Cyril have to put aside their aloofness.
