The Passing of the Third Floor Back plot
In a boarding house in London, a number of residents lead an uncertain existence on the verge of despair. Hungry for happiness, the housekeeper Stasia is treated like a work mule and constantly threatened with a return to her childhood punishments. Beautiful young Vivian loves the architect Chris, but she must marry the repugnant Wright to pay her parents' debts. Miss Kite makes fun of everything around her for fear of aging and loss of beauty. Her boyfriend Larkcom sells mediocre gramophone records, while he keeps secret that he would prefer to be a concert pianist. However, in the life of these and other unfortunate residents comes a mysterious stranger, under whose influence they each begin to see the possibility of happiness.

It's all over the top and undeniably highly staged, but the characters are well drawn, the dialogue is strong and the acting is very thorough, especially by Conrad Veidt (who can do as much with his eyes as most actors do with theirs). whole body) and Anna Stasia as the kitchen maid with a past in reform school (and with equally beautiful eyes). However, their mutual fire is regularly stolen by the extremely unpleasant Frank Cellier as Veidt's diabolical opponent, and the intriguing conflict between Veidt and Cellier's characters makes this film still worth watching 87 years later.
