Great Britain circa 1812. Nine-year-old orphan 'Pip' Pirrip lives in the countryside with his unsympathetic older sister and her kind-hearted husband and blacksmith Joe Gargery. While visiting his mother's grave near the moor, Pip is attacked by Abel Magwitch, a prisoner who escaped from a prison ship. Pip is intimidated by Abel and under his orders Pip goes to steal food and drink from the Gargeries. Although Abel initially intimidated Pip, a bond quickly forms between this hardened criminal and the boy. But then Abel is captured again.
