Exorcist: The Beginning plot

"Go back to where the horror began."

1944: Lankester Merrin, a priest, is forced by retreating Nazi soldiers to impose a life-and-death sentence on his parishioners. This event breaks his mind and destroys his faith. In 1947, Merrin, now an archaeologist, makes a startling discovery in the northwestern Turkana district of British East Africa. A Byzantine church is excavated completely intact. She was built and then buried. This discovery attracts the attention of the Archbishop in Nairobi who, through Major Granville, sends the young priest Francis to Derati in Turkana to keep an eye on Merrin's work.

One of the better parts.

Harlin is not a bad director, as it turns out. The original Exorcist was pretty okay, but after that came some sequels that absolutely failed to convince. Harlin again gives some name to the series, although it is sometimes a bit hesitant.

The CG may be a little too emphatic, but the rest of the film looks nice and atmospheric. A little too much loud scares, but there is a nice tension and the setting also contributes very aptly to that. Skarsgård is good, the rest of the cast a bit poor.

In the end, this Exorcist also lasts a little too long, but nice scenes are hidden throughout the film, which still manage to keep the momentum going. And so Harlin does not deliver a perfect film, but one that turns out better than expected. Not without shortcomings, but he does score at the right moments.

3.0*

Not good this prequel. The first half promises to be something else with an adventurous setting and a mysterious old church that is being excavated. A sultry Indiana Jones atmosphere is evoked at certain moments. After that it becomes a mess: an annoying switch from a confrontation between the British and the Turkana tribe to the paranormal events with the boy. The tension from Friedkin's unparalleled original is gone and the finale is a mess. I don't like using CGI in Exorcist films anyway... such films have to rely on makeup and tension building and I missed both here
