The remake of the 1946 classic. The shabby Frank Chambers gets a job at a restaurant owned by the attractive Cora and her rich old husband Nick during the 1930s Depression. Frank and Cora begin a fiery affair, and decide to get rid of Nick.

Brilliant remake with Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson as a slut in a star role. The rape scene in the kitchen is as classic as the one in Straw Dogs or the erotic scenes in 9 1/2 weeks.
With this film, Jessica Lange became my favorite actress in one fell swoop. What a nice piece that was then!
But the story is also very strong, proof that a remake can be better than the somewhat superficial original.
One of the best movies of the 80's.

You will feel the heat, says the poster pretentiously. Well, I especially had to turn up my heating for more heat, because I thought it was a weak affair, this love story between a crook and a slut. Nicholson and Lange were not exactly the most sensual couple on screen, even with the slight eroticism involved.
Besides plotting the murder of the older Greek husband , in the second half of the film the question is also whether Cora and Frank actually feel love for each other or just used each other [ /spoiler]. In my opinion, the revealing conclusion offers a good answer. Partly due to the better second half I still get 3* but that is also the maximum I can give. Still think the original is better.

A good film, in my opinion a bit misunderstood in the ratings.
An American rural drama that can count on excellent performers such as Nicholson and Jessica Lange.
Maybe here and there a small hitch in the plot and a bit of sensationalism, but the whole looks away quickly and remains fascinating.
