For me this experiment of that half theater/half movie didn't have much added value. I don't know exactly what it was because it looked very artistic, which I am normally open to. I would rather have seen this as a slightly more conventional costume drama. It also went like a train (which was appropriate, given the story, but because of that it took a lot to keep up with everything) and ironically because of that the film was very long, especially in the beginning I almost got up about to turn it off. Everything was filmed in one constant fast tempo and rhythm. There was nowhere to 'breathe'. This made it seem to me as if you were leafing through a picture print very quickly.
"Nice try" may sound very rude, but it's kind of how it comes across to me.
However, I also want to give a positive point, and that is that it was a feast for the eyes.

Wow, this movie looks beautiful. Fantastic compositions, beautiful images and great editing. I really liked the idea of the theater and thought it out well. The movements of the actors matched this perfectly. The fact that the cinematography is so good also has a consequence. Not enough attention has been paid to the story. The story is too full of characters that are not all well developed, too much is happening and the film feels like a long sit. It is not an annoying thing because the film has a consistently high level on a visual level, but at a certain point the routine does get in the way. In retrospect, the feeling of a missed opportunity, perhaps unjustly, lingers. With a good plot in which the actors can express themselves more in combination with this way of filming and creating visual compositions, I think there would have been a lot more. 3.5*

“Romantic love will be the last delusion of the old order.”

I always appreciate these kinds of movies. Anna Karenina needs some time to introduce all the characters and show what their relationships are. Knightley, Taylor-Johnson, Vikander, Jude Law etc. All the actors fit their roles perfectly. But the greatest strength of the film lies in the direction of Joe Wright, the sharp dialogues, the theater setting and the audiovisual part. Things that ensure that the tragic story of Anna Karenina remains a joy to watch.
