Businessman Russell Franklin invests many millions of dollars in a medical project to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Biologist Susan McAllister joins the project and has discovered that there is a substance in the brains of sharks that can reactivate human brain cells. To complete her research and develop an even more efficient drug, Susan turns to genetically engineered sharks. She breeds specimens with enormous brain capacity, but discovers that the sharks become so very intelligent and also so very aggressive...

Reasonable shark film that thankfully doesn't take itself too seriously. The tension is built up well and when all hell breaks loose after forty minutes, Deep Blue Sea becomes a cocktail of gruesome murders and black humor. A number of characters are introduced and the order in which they are killed is quite surprising (given the well-known actors who come along). The actors do a nice job and especially LL Cool J has a nice role. The special effects are hideous and the story is ridiculous, but that's not the point of these kind of movies. Pure entertainment.

Duncan Kennedy suffered from a recurring nightmare. In his nightmare, he was trapped in a narrow system of tunnels and was chased by sharks that could apparently read his mind. Since Kennedy writes scripts for films, that dream was a nice source of inspiration for the sharks that do their aggressive thing in Deep Blue Sea.
Entertaining movie by the way. A mixture of science fiction, action and horror. Director Renny Harlin got a decent budget for it and it shows in the film. Visually, the film looks stunning. The setting, the effects, the sharks. They are perfectly fine, help with empathy and add to the tension. The camera does an atmospheric job and eagerly uses the claustrophobic setting to evoke a threat. The explosive montage of the action scenes does the rest. Nothing new under the sun, just expertly executed.
The cast consists of well-known names. They play interchangeable characters that you can easily identify with. And as it should be, there is now and then some humor built in to neutralize the tension. And so Deep Blue Sea is fun entertainment and time passes in a pleasant way.
