Partly because Netflix is removing this from its range, I wanted to catch this film at the last minute. Now you see me is a cross between The Prestige (2006)/The Illusionist (2006) and Ocean's Eleven (2001). It all starts very spectacularly when the gang of 4 is introduced with their abilities. What follows is a spectacle that is held throughout the film.

The plot isn't super complicated, but with its predictable twists and twists on twists, you'll have to keep your eye on it. The cast is well chosen. This is a fine Hollywood binoculars. The viewer is captivated from the start. I thought it was strange that I had the same card in mind for the opening scene, just like in the film, strange (although I did have an explanation for it because it had to stand out more trick-wise).

Visually a pleasing film with some cleverly put together shows and platforms. This movie is entertaining and the shows felt like a real TV show in real life. Nice for a Saturday evening and to slump in the sofa, but that's about it.

Film was originally an extension of magic: a form of illusion and magic. A film about magic therefore has the appeal that it is meta, because film itself is also magic, especially if it is done consciously, as in this film: the viewer is also constantly misled. In fact, the magic tricks, the story and the movie blend together like three layers of illusion, now that the idea of the story is that a magician takes magic to a global level so that life itself becomes a piece of magic again and then that again the typical Hollywood way of making a film full of speed, witty statements and unexpected turns so that because of the dexterity of the images you don't know what to look for and you are always afraid of missing the clue.

The film does not have much depth, but that is not what film is made for: film is for illusion and for trickery to bring a little magic into our lives. I think the film succeeded in that.

J. Daniel Atlas [Jesse Eisenberg], Meritt McKinney [Woody Harrelson], Henley Reeves [Isla Fisher] and Jack Wilder [Dave Franco] are brilliant mentalists who, after a mysterious invitation from multimillionaire Arthur Tressler [Michael Caine], become the stars of a spectacular show in Las Vegas. During one of their shows, they create the illusion that a random spectator is robbing a bank in Paris. When it turns out that that bank has been robbed at exactly the same moment, French agent Alma Dray [Mélanie Laurent] comes to Vegas and teams up with FBI agent Dylan Rhodes [Mark Ruffalo] to expose the foursome. But where is the concrete evidence? Morgan Freeman has a role as the host of a program that exposes illusionists in this far-fetched, but very entertaining crime comedy in which Eisenberg and Harrison in particular clearly feel like a fish in water. Don't try to make any logic behind this, but let yourself be carried away by the visual razzle-dazzle and brisk pace of this unpretentious film that fans of mentalism will enjoy even more.
