Me and Wes Anderson will never be all right. Though he commands awe with his very own style, with those sets that seem to have been provisionally taped together with duct tape, papier-mâché and cardboard, when in reality it was a painstaking job to fill each shot with this eye-pleasing 'quirkiness'. . Or I am in awe of how Anderson here made a pastiche of so many different film traditions (eg silent film, western, West Side Story, Screwball Comedy) and knit it together with that characteristic nostalgic, melancholy hipster freshness. Or I'm in awe at how he puts character actors, such as Edward Norton and Bruce Willis, in roles so far removed from their public image as mourners and action heroes, but who come into their own with surprising sensitivity in this print. And Bill Murray who is Bill Murray again - and that many more Bill Murray may appear in films by this striking filmmaker. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it's so artificial and contrived for me that I never get the idea that I'm being dragged into an overwhelming whole. Rather a few winks less and a deeper elaboration of characters and themes.

Directed by: Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson's eccentric romantic comedy is set in 1965 during a Boy Scout camp on the island of New Pencanze that is only accessible by boat and where you can only get around on foot. Camp leader Ward [Edward Norton] enlists the help of police officer Sharp [Bruce Willis] and those quintessentially colorful inhabitants that only exist in Wes Anderson's universe to find runaway Boy Scout Sam Shakusky [Jared Gilman]. This, meanwhile, has met the bored Suzy [Kara Hayward] and takes her on a trek across the island. A more conventional story than Anderson's next works, but the lack of chemistry between and the limited acting talent of Gilman and Hayward is counterproductive. Murray and McDormand are entertaining as Suzy's eccentric parents and Norton in Boy Scout outfits is a must-see.
