Compliance plot

"How far would you go?"

Becky and Sandra are not the best of friends. Sandra is a middle-aged manager at a fast food restaurant. Becky is a teenager who really needs a job. During a stressful day, Becky is accused by a police officer of stealing money from a customer's purse, which she vehemently denies. Overwhelmed by her managerial responsibility, Sandra gives in to the officer's order to arrest Becky. This choice sets in motion a nightmare that tragically blurs the lines between efficiency, prudence, legality and reasonableness.

Excellent film in which a police officer accuses a fast food employee of theft over the phone. A bizarre true story that is realistically portrayed but that quickly becomes unbelievable (especially because you can't believe it yourself). However, it does result in a fascinating and extremely uncomfortable and even frustrating film.

The most interesting thing about Compliance is the reactions it provoked. Apparently it is an incredibly faithful film version of a true event, which deviates little from the security footage that was made of it. Nevertheless, a large part of the messages on the internet, on MovieMeter or elsewhere, seems to find the film unbelievable. An even larger part uses the opportunity to position themselves superior to the people depicted here and to emphasize that they themselves would never be fooled like that. To be fair, it is also a story that is so bizarre that you do not want to believe it, but the film actually succeeds very well in making it believable, although as a viewer you probably cannot help but look indignant.

Compliance works best as a thought experiment: "What would I do in this situation?" I knew going in that it was a prank call, so as a viewer I had an advantage here. Anyone would probably be suspicious, but how far would you go? Personally, I found the idea of a police officer making a complaint over the phone instead of by coming to the house to be a bit strange. My first thought was to use another phone to call the local police and check out this story. But you can only speculate what you would do.

Quite interesting to have seen once. The film is also well acted and skillfully made. Not a great film and perhaps a bit too dependent on the sensational subject, but nothing wrong with that.

3*

Very grim film with an incredible background, since director Craig Zobel bases his story on a true incident and apparently stayed close to the facts. It confirms that Zobel repeatedly manages to get the interesting ideas on the big screen and can support this with a decent execution, because Compliance benefits from a suitably gray approach, credible acting performances and a nice increase in pressure. It is a pity that the punch line is given away somewhat carelessly and randomly, so that the unknowing viewer knows a little too early what exactly is going on. The pressure of the background (a chaotic workplace and too few staff) is also not given enough, so that the film perhaps lacks some substantiation. Nevertheless, it remains an effective, intense and bizarre story.
