"Where nothing is as it seems."
Michael Williams (Nicolas Cage) leads a nomadic life and ends up in the town of Red Rock. Local innkeeper Wayne Brown mistakenly mistook him for the hit man he hired to kill his young wife Suzanne. Michael urgently needs the money and accepts the offer, but Suzanne offers him more money so as not to pull the trigger. He flees with the money, but the situation gets really complicated when the real hit man, Lyle (Dennis Hopper), shows up and demands the money.

Excellent film in which a man looking for work ends up in a small town and is mistaken for a hitman. The atmosphere and tone of this neo-noir are just right (the setting, the music and the characters). An entertaining plot with a few tense moments. The casting is also very good.

Nic Cage had his breakthrough with 'Rasing Arizona and then with Wild at Heart, Vampires Kiss'. All excellent films with a Cage that we all know. In 1993 we see him in the Indi movie Red Rock West. One of the few movies of his I hadn't seen.
Excellent Film Noir, with characters all wrong. Written, directed by John Dahl. Nowadays you see him doing a lot of TV, think of Dexter but also Ray Donovan and Justified. Seen too few of his films, that will certainly change. The writing in particular is great. Something you rarely see in a crime thriller these days. The choice of what Cage's character should make is excellent, unexpected. You won't believe what he's going through in such a short time. There is little time to get to know Michael but his qualities, actions and character says enough what you need to know about him. Later in the film we see JT Walsh as the bar owner-Sherif. A character actor that you don't see much but is just very good in his role. Lara Flynn Boyle, who I mainly know from Twin Peaks, plays Suzanne, plays a nice sexy femme fatale. Her appearance is beautiful, and she has good chemistry with Cage. She appears in the movie between 28 and 33 but she was only 22 at the time! Finally Dennis Hopper as the hit man. Great role from him as the antagonist. He's so good at playing the bad guy. His dialogues and the way he handles his lyrics is amazing. He also has a smile that really makes him a psycho.
By the third act, things got a bit predictable but despite that, Red Rock West is an absolute must, especially if you like smart, good writing and a psycho Dennis Hopper.
