Good film in which a Russian submarine goes on a mission with two strangers traveling on board. A good story that takes place during the Cold War and is partly based on true facts. A number of exciting moments and an excellent and entertaining film within the subgenre of submarine thrillers. It's a bit of a shame that the Russians only speak English.

Given the relatively low average score, I had lowered my expectations somewhat, but that turned out not to have been necessary after all. Now I'm a fan of submarine films anyway, especially those with a high degree of truth, and Phantom certainly stands out. a large portion in that category.

The story is set in the 1960s when the Cold War is at its height. Russian Captain Dmitri Zubov (excellently played by Ed Harris) and his crew are on a somewhat outdated submarine for a mission to the Pacific Ocean. After a while he starts to become suspicious about the purpose of his broadcast. What follows is a fairly exciting and realistic story with a few nice plot twists where the well-hit claustrophobic atmosphere in the boat is an added value. In addition to Harris, I found William Fichtner, in particular, has a remarkably strong performance as his second man. Something that applied to the majority of the crew, with the exception of David Duchovny, who does not play badly but is simply not convincing enough as a Soviet.

And although the film, which dates back to 2013 but only came to my attention a few years ago, was a complete flop at the time, the hour and a half fly by and Phantom is entertaining almost the entire time, interesting and, although not exceptional, just good.

Deserved better.

Very loosely based on the mystery surrounding K-129, a Russian submarine with three nuclear weapons on board that sank in 1968, probably due to an implosion. Featuring Ed Harris as the Russian captain and a decent supporting cast, expect considerably more than this cheap failed attempt at capturing some of the magic of genre classics like Das Boot (1981) or The Hunt For Red October (1990). I have no idea what exactly the mission was, but that is partly because there is so much talk that my attention quickly started to wane. William Fichtner plays the executive commander, David Duchovny a KGB agent who is vague about the reasons for his presence. An extremely boring waste of talent.
