Apparently the average should speak for itself, because not many words are wasted on it.

I am surprised about the term "comedy" here. The film certainly has a somewhat lighter undertone, the appearance of Qiu Ju in the city will also aim for a certain comic effect, but otherwise this is just a drama I think.

Zhang is visually disappointing. His characteristic use of color is only sporadically there. And I really mean a number of scenes/shots that can be counted on one hand. Furthermore, the film has a pale appearance, not beautiful.

The story is a bit too repetitive but otherwise funny to follow. Two stubborn people who can't settle their differences and continue to do so.

Ultimately, there is a bit of a strange ending, where in the last 5 minutes the moral is switched. In itself quite nice, the film does say something nice about the sense of justice of people and the means with which they pursue that sense of justice, but it is not subtle at all. It all seems too constructed for that.

The rest is a nice video to watch, but it is fairly low down in Zhang's beautiful oeuvre.

3*

One of the lesser Yimou Zhang films. The usually colorful settings are missing and have made way for gray images. In addition, summer landscapes seamlessly transition into winter scenes and vice versa within one and the same scene. I think Kusturica copied that from this film in his Život Je Čudo. Where the spectacular settings are missing, the film does give a good impression of life in a remote Chinese village. However, it is especially the street scenes of the big city, which seem to have been made with a hidden camera, that really appealed to me. Similar images also appear in Zhang's Yi Ge Dou Bu Neng Shao (Not One Less) (1999).

It is not a comedy with all kinds of jokes and gags, but the story as a whole with its complications does go through a comic development. Gong Li is almost unrecognizable compared to her other films. Only in the final scene you can see that it is really her.

I am such a fan of Yimou Zhang's films, I saw this one after Happy Times, two films that many consider to be lesser ones by Zhang, but I thought they were very beautiful.
