First seen half a century ago, in the cinema, guided by my father, and 13 views later, I still can't get enough of it. I cannot call this a serious war film à la All quiet on the Western front, Twelve o'clock high or Saving Private Ryan, but the absolute top in the adventurous variant à la The great escape, The dirty dozen and Where eagles dare. Gregory Peck and Stanley Baker both seem to view this as an anti-war film, presumably because of the various ethical dilemmas Foreman raises in his script (Baker's shell shock, Scala's reasons for betrayal, Peck using or sacrificing Quayle to mislead the Germans, Niven's emphasis on individual humanity), but I see that myself more as elements to increase the tension a bit than as "messages" to make the viewers at home think again . Lots of stars, a good plot, a decent tempo, a shipwreck scene (no music but with an excellent wind-filled soundtrack) that still looks good (contrary to the obvious background projection on the ensuing mountain climb, at least on my DVD - and on the Blu-Ray might be even worse), a perfectly cast Peck, an excellent serious role from David Niven who delivers his two emotional monologues really great, and the icing on the cake is the beautiful twist in the scene where Anthony Quinn humiliates himself during interrogation before the Germans – I can still remember how elated I was as a boy when his true intentions became clear). Believe it or not, it immediately makes me want to watch it for the fifteenth time. Hollywood action-adventure entertainment at its best.

For lovers of WWII classics this is really one of the very best!!!

A film from >60 years ago, after having been revised for the umpteenth time, just gives constant tension again.

Excellent (1960s) acting and constant action and events from start to finish, with a very nice playing time of over 2.5 hours!

In addition, a beautiful setting in Greece and the (Nazi) details are also perfectly fine!

Despite it being a fictional story, it is very believable and I still have the doubt whether "the guns" might have existed after all...

If such an old movie can still trigger all this after 10+ revisions, there's no other way than to fill in the full 5 stars!

Excellent!

5*

1 of my favorite war movies, and personally I think the 60's war movies are the best but that is of course my opinion. Besides these, The Great Escape, The Longest Day, Where Eagles Dare and The Dirty Dozen of those movies are what I mean. Anyway, coming back to the film, the story after Alistair MacLean's book about a team of commandos to blow up the 2 cannons of Navarone (fictional name, but stands for the Aegean Sea, which lies between Greece and Turkey). This team led by the likes of Mallory, (Gregory Peck) Miller (David Niven) and Stavros (Anthony Quinn) are given the impossible task of doing this. During this trip they will have to deal with enough elements, they will complete their mission I say watch it if you haven't seen it yet. The story is well done, the action scenes are beautiful and the setting of Greece is also well thought out. All in all, a classic that keeps you interested for 2.5 hours, but maybe a bit too slow for some, check it out.
