It would have been better if I had 'immersed' myself in the film first. Instead of the gray drama I expected, this is more of an 'exciting' family film. I have nothing against family films, but if you expect something different, it may take some time to switch things up. It all feels very light and simple, but towards the end the film does what it is supposed to do, as a viewer you suddenly fully support the main characters and hope that they win against 'the evil opponent'. Google just taught me that this film is a project by the residents of Schellebelle, which makes a film like this extra fun. The film is not at all what I expected, but it is certainly a solid film.

I spent my entire childhood in the neighboring Scheldt municipality upstream and have now lived a stone's throw further downstream from Schellebelle for 15 years. Schellebelle, recently voted the most beautiful village name in Flanders, is a beautiful village along the winding Scheldt where you can enjoy walking, cycling or sailing.
So nice to see a film of Schellebelle from 100 years ago. A film project that got out of hand, but one that should be seen with a completely non-professional cast with many locals taking part in the auditions. The real mayor of Wichelen (of which Schellebelle is a sub-municipality), Kenneth Taylor, was also finally able to put his studies as a director into practice for a large (Flemish) audience alongside Johan Heldenbergh.
The little experienced cast does well, Coralie in particular stands out, but the more experienced Raouf Hadj Mohamed also does well. It's nice to see a number of Flemish (top) actors making cameos.
The plot goes well, but the language is very vulgar, which is not very obvious for Dutch people. Luckily there are subtitles on the DVD. The final part during the unveiling was rather poorly developed. This was not due to the cast itself, but possibly due to financial resources or lack of time.

Wonderful idea to play such a drama with many non-actors, but it's a pity that there are few who can also act. The story also seems rather messy and the film certainly lacks subtitles; I missed a lot because it was often incomprehensible... The ending was successful, which unfortunately I cannot say about the rest of the film.
