Summer just gone all of a sudden and yet another grey day in a row, turning on the heater seems just a bit excessive and so we’ve been too cold for 3 days already, refugee misery and the suicide of Joost Zwagerman on the news, even Wouter Bos manages to make the news again!!

And then it is time to resort to drastic measures: Dean Martin for the songs and Jerry Lewis for the gags, and otherwise lots of color and not making things too complicated... fifties Hollywood entertainment at its best, the day is saved again!

During my primary school years, I was completely obsessed with Lewis & Martin (just like Abbott & Costello, Norman Wisdom, and George Formby). Now, sixty years later, I have to admit that that was probably a (understandable?) youthful indiscretion. I don't find it appealing anymore. Jerry Lewis's overly exaggerated bumbling, in particular, is more irritating than funny. Dean Martin's songs and the performance of a young Shirley MacLaine provide some balance in this film. It certainly looks like Dorothy Malone walked straight out of Madame Tussauds.

Jerry Lewis's humor doesn't normally appeal to me, but I was persuaded by the presence of Shirley MacLaine on the poster. Fortunately, it still works with Dean Martin in the cast. That creates two different couples and thus moments of respite in a film where Jerry Lewis primarily delivers physical and, by now, sometimes dated humor. Director Frank Tashlin had mainly experience with animated films, including Looney Tunes. In the early 1950s, he also started making feature films, and with this film, he clearly shows that he is capable of more than just short animations. The whole thing is mostly well-maintained and doesn't stand out anywhere. It is a typical sweet Hollywood musical comedy. But good enough to enjoy, with the necessary humor and charm.
