Not quite as strong as Chicken Run or Wallace & Gromit, but nevertheless beautifully made and full of successful jokes. The story is also nice and absurd and Hugh Grant is perfect as the Pirate Captain. Little wrong with it; especially very charming.

It never really clicked between me and an Aardman, despite the fact that they have everything to please me: a very British sense of humour, great stop-motion and a high dose of creativity. I don't have an explanation of why it never really worked. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists is their most recent film and was mostly seen as a disappointment. Strangely enough, this is the one that really worked for me.

At least for the most part. For a film with this sense of humor I would have hoped for a slightly more original story. Fortunately, the details of the story are often comical, but nevertheless the brave way in which the Pirate Captain came to an understanding and the ensuing big confrontation felt a bit standard. Somehow that just doesn't fit with something like The Pirates!

Fortunately, this mainly has to do with the aforementioned details and there are an awful lot of them. Most shots seem to contain a lot of hidden jokes or unexpected elements. And as predictable as the story may be, it is still delivered with a good sense of absurdism and idiocy. There are a lot of jokes in it, some lame, but most of them hit the spot and some moments are really hilarious (the ghost ship got the biggest laugh for me). The mix between stop-motion and CGI works very well here and is perhaps also essential in a more grotesque adventure like this. Also my compliments to Hugh Grant, whose voice I didn't recognize at all here, but fit surprisingly well.

All in all a fun and above all funny adventure. I can imagine this is a type of humor that is a bit specific and doesn't appeal to a huge audience, but then again I don't see why it's being pushed aside by Aardman fans. Although, I put those other films of theirs aside as well. Maybe reconsider.

A fine movie indeed. As a kid I did see a few other Aardman productions and I remember liking Chicken Run in particular. This The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists mainly distinguishes itself from other animation films by its somewhat satirical tone. Well-known figures from British history (such as Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin) are heavily caricatured and that makes for some funny moments. Fictional characters such as the Pirate Captain and his right-hand man Number Two are also very nicely conceived and developed. In that regard, I think the film has successfully reached both young and adult audiences. The well-known voice cast is very strong, the soundtrack fine and the animation, although I will probably always remain a big fan of hand-drawn animation, very well done. At times a bit (too) hysterical, but the entertainment value is all right.

3*
