I used to watch the films of the duo Stan Laurel (the comedian) and Oliver Hardy (the straight man) regularly as a child in the 70s, mainly on German channels, and this one is no exception. The story is quite fun, but of course, it is mainly about the jokes and the antics of the entertaining duo. In that regard, there is plenty in this film, and because it lasts barely an hour, it is also an easy watch.

I've also seen pretty much everything by this duo, incl. many a 'stupid' one via a downloaded package where
there were about 50 movies on there. Curiously enough, not this one, which is actually quite entertaining too,
even though many jokes feel rather like repetition exercises, I could still heartily enjoy them again
laugh.

The film is a piece of American war propaganda. The men do whatever it takes to enlist and do their bit for 'Uncle Sam' in the fight against the Japanese. And Laurel & Hardy chasing and fighting Nazi spies? Come on! That just doesn't feel right. The film is really too serious by Laurel & Hardy standards. An attempt is made to create a film with a real story and even some depth, but that is not what Laurel & Hardy is about. We want to see silly, naive, and innocent fun. Of course, there are comedic moments and slapstick, but the combination of those with the film's serious undertone feels off.
The film does give a good picture of how an average American town dealt with the war; from a historical perspective, therefore, it is quite interesting to see.
Not an absolute must-see for Laurel & Hardy fans, but certainly not an unwatchable film either. There are definitely some fun moments in it and it never gets boring. It's just a shame that the tone is far too serious, meaning Laurel & Hardy never really get the chance to shine the way they normally do.
