Great depressing character study. Even though the melancholy theme is treacherous, there is no question of cheap effect. Trier hardly wastes any effort on sympathizing with the main character. The causes of Anders' depression are therefore secondary, the focus is on the consequences, the way in which it controls his daily life and makes it 'impossible'. This is all explained without frills and with great tact in realistic and often urgent dialogues. The closing scenes at the pool and at the family home are heartbreaking. How hard can hardly explained suffering of a stranger arrive. Phenomenal lead by the way. Quiet and resigned, but at times you can see the subcutaneous magma pushing towards the surface. Give that man a prize.

Interesting discussions here on this film. I agree that the main character seems to have already made his decision, but I can't help feeling that if someone had been protecting him during the day, or in some other way about had taken pity on him that this would have yielded a different result. Of course, the film doesn't seem to show the damage he did during his drug period. Not quite as thrilling as I expected the movie to be. Had expected more focus on his relationship with Oslo outside his circle of friends. Nevertheless, great movie.

In Oslo, 31. August we follow a depressed young man who stays in a drug rehab center for 24 hours. During a day off, he visits friends and family to discuss things. What follows is a kind of love-hate relationship that Anders finds difficult to place. His life is broken and it no longer makes sense to him. He longs for a normal existence, but at the same time he abhors that normal banal and above all boring existence. He also views the expectations that society imposes on everyone with varying emotions.

Anders Danielsen Lie does very well as a melancholy man. He carries the film and does so convincingly. Here and there some nice scenes such as the conversations he follows in a cafe. Not the topper I expected to see, but overall decent. Social criticism also appealed to me. But maybe not for everyone, because not that much happens. Nipped 3.5*.
