Dave used to be a tough cop in New Orleans, but recently he has put his promising career on the back burner in order to build a quieter life with his wife. However, this peace does not last long. When a plane crashes near their house and a corpse disappears, Dave sets out to investigate. His detective work leads him to a cruel drug lord, who does not shy away from using violence.

Best scene in this movie is the nude scene of Teri Hatcher on the landing. The story is not too bad and I thought Alec Baldwin and Eric Roberts played quite well.

Alec Baldwin is not the most logical choice for a role as Dave Robicheaux, a former cop who struggles with his alcoholism, his aggression and his faith. When he and his wife Annie [Kelly Lynch] witness a small plane crash into the lake during a fishing trip, Dave manages to save a young girl [Samantha Lagpacan]. For a moment, Dave hopes that his good deed will help him come to terms with himself, but when several dark figures knock on his door, he quickly concludes that he and Annie have landed in a dangerous situation. Well-acted thriller with a few strong action scenes (including a chase over rooftops) and the presence of my favorite B-actor Eric Roberts (who plays excellently here) is an advantage. It is only a pity that the film becomes a somewhat conventional revenge thriller in the last part.

I discovered James Lee Burke about four years ago as a writer of strong neo-noir thrillers with mainly the same main character, Dave Roubichaux. And over the years I have collected and read quite a few books including this title called Prisoner of Heaven. A year before discovering the books, I already saw In The Electric Mist with Tommy Lee Jones, a film that I experienced as quite mediocre at the time and in which I now retroactively do not recognize Dave Roubichaux at all, Jones is much too old for the role. Just because of that knowledge I was very curious about these Heaven's Prisoners.
And it must be said that Baldwin doesn't seem like a strong match at first either and tries too hard with a weird accent. Moreover, Baldwin seems just too smooth, a pretty boy, for the slightly rawer and harder Vietnam veteran Roubichaux. Nice is the detail with the gray lock of hair. Still, the film doesn't get much further than the impression of an average TV movie for the first half hour. But when the misery starts to pile up and the annoying people almost walk down the door, the film slowly starts to clear up to a better level with a Baldwin taking the role in combination with a decent soundtrack and a nice image of the environment.
Nice is the appearance of Kelly Lynch, daring that of Hatcher. It is also striking that the book is followed quite well, even though I don't remember the details very well, yet it seems as said that the book is being maintained properly, even though the denouement in Huize Rocque is different. Incidentally, also a great role from uber wrong Eric Roberts. It makes the film, together with a decent chase scene and the necessary action, a great thriller and, without being a high flyer itself, easily beats In The Electric Mist.
