After a Friday night party with his straight friends, Russell heads to a gay bar. Just before closing time, he picks up Glen. But what was meant to be a one-time thing turns into something else, something special. In a weekend full of bars and bedrooms, alcohol and drugs, talking and sex, the two men get to know each other better.

I have nothing to do with the Before films and I'm certainly not crazy about these kinds of atmospheric films that only rely on the dialogues. In Weekend, a hipster gay man with a hipster beard and a hipster cap is followed. He picks up someone and then it becomes a confusing weekend for both of them. The problem is often that only a few scenes can really get my attention, because they are really interesting. Most of the time, however, I didn't find it particularly interesting.

This super-romantic film reminded me a lot of Sodom (2017). Two sexy men who spend a weekend together, talk about their past, present and future, their desires and fears, laugh together and experience love in its purest form. And unfortunately both movies have a similar bittersweet ending. Beautiful film with many emotions and unfulfilled desires!

After a joint one-night stand, Russell [Tom Cullen] is subjected to an in-depth interview about his sex life by Glen [Chris New]. The rest of the film is endless chatter about sex, sexual identity and how difficult it is to be openly gay. Director Andrew Haigh was at least smart enough to understand that there must be some variety, so he lets the two men drink, do drugs and have sex in between.

This talkative concept lends itself much better to a podcast, because what happens on screen is not interesting at all (fun assignment: name 5 movies with a meaningful sex scene) and all the fuss around it only causes unnecessary delay. The acting of both protagonists is, under the circumstances, good and Urszula Pontikos portrays everything as beautifully as possible, but this is a textbook example of what Hitchcock condescendingly labeled as "images of people talking".
