Carnage plot
"A new comedy of no manners"
The film is set in contemporary New York. Two married couples meet shortly after their sons argue. Michael and Penelope, whose son had his teeth knocked out with a stick, invite Alan and Nancy to talk things over. The attempt at having a civilized discussion about whose child is responsible for the argument, and how the parents influence this violent behavior, quickly turns into a major argument.

Man I laughed my ass off at this...
The scenes where the "adult" "decent people let themselves go... fantastic to watch...
All the typical Polanski elements are present here:
*limited number of actors
(in this movie only 4, now and then a person calls and talk about the 2 sons but only 4 actors really come into the picture)
* Not much happens, but he is mainly concerned with the psychological under the skin (for lack of better wording)
* it touches you somewhere and is somehow recognizable.
Lately I've been in Roman Polanski mood, and I've borrowed several films from him from the library.
This is certainly one of his most successful.

Not quite my thing this. I went in without any expectations and just went by the four main characters. They did not disappoint: all four are doing fine and Christoph Waltz in particular managed to make me laugh several times. The absurdity of the situation and the realization of how much things are escalating eventually lead to a chuckle. On the other hand, the film also just starts to get boring at times. The short duration made it easy for me to sit through the film, but if it had gone on like this for another half hour, I doubt I would have said the same thing.
That the film is written by Roman Polanski doesn't tell me much. I've seen four of his films besides Carnage: Bitter Moon and The Pianist (good) and Oliver Twist and The Ghost Writer (nice). From what I remember they are all four completely different movies and I can't link Carnage to any of those four movies at the same time. I think this is the least of the list. The film is enjoyable at times, but also regularly rubs against irritation.

Alan [Christoph Waltz] and Nancy Cowan [Kate Winslet] visit the apartment of Michael [John C. Reilly] and Penny Longstreet [Jodie Foster] to agree on what action to take after a scuffle between their sons. Initially the tone is still reasonable, although the conversation is frequently interrupted by phone calls to Alan's address. Slowly but surely the irritation grows and the conversation takes an unpleasant turn. Excellently cast and excellently acted tragicomedy, thanks to Polanski's directing, never becomes a farce. Although the story is a bit thin, Polanski deserves extra praise for the way in which he manages to break through the static setting.
