The poster shows Louis Gossett Jr. he already looks doubtful and he is closer to crying than laughing. That is clearly the case with this film because it is just so bad. If they had an Iron Eagle movie marathon in the theater, I don't think anyone would survive. On the other hand, of course no one would go there, because you would have to be tired of watching 4 Iron Eagle films in a row.

The only thing worth mentioning in this film is the somewhat unusual Rachel McLish. Not that she can act, but because she is different from a normal actress. She is a female bodybuilder. The first word of the film also applies to her because she has of course pushed up a lot of iron in her life. Or as the Americans say "Pumping Iron".

By far the best from this mediocre series. Under the direction of John Glen - who directed all (official) Bond films from the 1980s - the flying scenes are filmed in a classic style that fits the story about a number of military aviation veterans who, led by Louis Gossett Jr., get their money's worth earn money with a spectacular air show in which they simulate air battles. There's also significantly more plot and the ground-level action scenes are capably executed and directed. Rachel McLish, a celebrated bodybuilder who had a central role in the documentary 'Pumping Iron: The Women', makes her feature film debut here and, although her physical beauty is clearly emphasized, she still manages to deliver an acceptable performance. Chappy and his friends decide to do their part in 'The War On Drugs' because 'it's killin' out people, man!' So off to Peru to bombard a caricatured villain with caricatured accomplices with a thousand bombs and grenades. Once again a stupid story, but the film is a bit lighter in tone and the friendship between the four old pilots is nicely developed.

The Iron Eagle series almost resembles something of the 'historical documents' from Galaxy Quest - each part has a separate atmosphere that clearly refers to that year. This time a flashback to the 'war on drugs'. And not only that, the (B-list) actors are also appropriate for that period every time. This makes every film decidedly nostalgic - and if the makers had anticipated that effect and made a conscious choice for it, then that is certainly genius in retrospect. But the reality is that they borrowed from a recent TV production in the easiest possible way, both in terms of plot elements, crew and the plot.

You have to look with a somewhat lenient eye for the content, because it is not very good. Still, between the clichés there are a few amusing discoveries - how the old guys deal with the fighter jets is the best example of this. And the way Rachel McLish escapes, well, that's a completely different Iron Eagle.
