The Cay plot
Young Phillip (Alfred Lutter III) lives with his mother (Gretchen Corbett) in Curaçao during World War II. They decide to flee the war by taking a ship to Virginia. After a torpedo attack, Phillip is separated from his mother and loses consciousness. When he regains consciousness, he is on a raft with Timothy (James Earl Jones) and his cat. However, the attack left Phillip blind. After floating around for a long time, they reach a desert island where they have to survive.

A captivating survival story starring the spoiled Phillip as the young Alfred Lutter, who certainly doesn't always act convincingly in the beginning, but also featuring James Earl Jones (almost unrecognizable with his white wig and thick beard) who, beneath his accent and broken English, consistently lets his humanity and dignity shine through. The story is told compactly (after just two minutes, Phillip, Timothy, and the cat are on the raft), and the anti-racist message isn't shoved down the viewer's throat but serves as an undertone to the growing friendship between the two main characters. Absolutely worth watching. (By the way, a "cay" is a coral island; I had to look that up.)
