Reasonable film that lacks some depth, good role by Strong, some strong moments and the beautiful images make it all just worth it. Nice but Annaud has done better work.

Decent Arab film.
I sometimes thought Antonio Banderas' acting was a bit too exaggerated, every now and then some lame humor is thrown in that doesn't fit in at all and the ending tended a bit too much towards sweetness because of that pregnant thing.
On the other hand, the story is quite captivating, the battles are beautifully done and the visuals are fine.

3.0*

Texan Oil's interest in shale oil in the desert (the so-called "yellow belt") of Saudi Arabia leads Emir Nesib [Antonio Banderas] to decide to have a 15-year truce with Sultan Amar [Mark Strong] declared invalid. Nesib's hunger for big money from the American oil industry inevitably leads to a revival of the tribal warfare of the past. A key role is reserved for Auda [Tahar Rahim], Amar's eldest son, who was raised by Nesib. Although he is above all a bookworm, Amar must try to unite the tribes against the common enemy: the imperialist Americans. Failed attempt at a mix of Lawrence Of Arabia and Lion Of The Desert with neat camerawork by Jean-Marie Drejou, a screenplay by Oscar winner Menno Meyes (The Color Purple) and a score by James Horner, but despite a few scenes with hundreds of extras this hardly distinguishes itself from a B-movie. Despite the cardboard characters and the soap-like plot it is a nice example of pro-Arab propaganda.
