Sea of Love plot

"Deception is dangerous. Desire is deadly."

New York police detective Frank Keller is embittered by his divorce and in the midst of a midlife crisis. Together with his colleagues, he searches Manhattan for a ruthless psychopath who is after 'women's devourers'. Her strategy: she humiliates them in bed, after which she gives them a fatal shot in the neck and leaves the single 'Sea of Love' playing on the record player. The woman appears to be recruiting her victims from lonely hearts sections in newspapers. The detectives try to lure her by placing a poetic ad, to which they get dozens of responses. Keller fixes himself on a specific suspect, the blond Helen Cruger and falls in love with it too. That makes him swing between his love and sense of duty, as more and more clues point to Helen as the perpetrator...

Meh.

Sea of Love is a thriller in which I am amazed at the high score. However, part of this surprise is rightly unfair, because these kinds of films are not exactly my thing. Then why did I look at him? The guide gave it 5 stars, I didn't know what it was, and once I start it I finish it. Sea of Love was no different.

Unfortunately, this film does not rise far above a fairly ordinary romantic thriller. The original element in this film is perhaps that the romance gets a little more focus, so that the thriller is pushed more into the background. Crime is also included, but that is more the underlying theme and some short murder scenes in between.

Acting is still decent, but I thought the chemistry between Pacino and Barkin was mediocre, especially because Pacino looks like he could be Barkin's father. As a non-fan of romance, the frequent erotic tension between the two is mainly inhibiting, and also makes little impression. The characters are idiosyncratic enough, but because of that they actually get in the way of some realism in a crazy way.

I also thought it was a shame that the film completely neglects the mysterious aspect, so that the final twist no longer makes an impression. I thought that the viewer had few opportunities to think along with the story, which made the outcome feel somewhat random. To struggle through a whole mountain of romance and limited murder scenes for that feels a bit unfair. That is mainly my perception, if it is your thing, then it is your thing.

So it's a boring thriller, which I can hardly call genre work, but that doesn't seem to be the intention of the film either. What starts out as a captivating crime thriller eventually gets bogged down in a fairly clunky, romantic film, and I had a hard time struggling through that. I already did not trust that guide, and Sea of Love is further proof of that.
