The Hunter plot

"Some mysteries should never be solved."

Tasmania. For a long time, the Tasmanian tiger was thought to be extinct until it was spotted. The possum plays to the imagination of the locals and sparks the interest of dubious outsiders. One is Martin, who is tasked with finding the beast for a biotech company. However, what begins as a business offer takes on mythical aspects when Martin's quest turns into an obsession. A quest not for ultimate profit, but for the essence of life destroyed by technology.

Little masterpiece in my opinion.

Beautiful adventure film in which a shadowy figure (Dafoe) is looking for a species believed to be extinct and becomes involved in a small family drama. The film constantly alternates between the adventure and quest of Dafoe's character and his time with the host family. And this creates quite a bit of tension and mystery. Does that tiger exist? Who else is behind the animal? What happened to the father of the family? What is the role of Jack Mindy? In the end, everything and everyone turns out to be connected.

In addition, it is also visually a gem. If the story doesn't interest you, you can still marvel at beautiful wildlife images of Tasmania.

Dafoe's performance is serene but convincing. I also thought the children (especially the girl) acted very naturally.

Recommended!

And then late on the BBC you will be treated to a film that sometimes has flesh on its bones without wanting to explain everything in detail about the motives, etc. Dafoe thrives in the role. You have to give the man something to do ("huh Anton Corbijn?"), and then you get something. Lots of room for the relationships between the people, especially the kiddos (a breath of fresh air!), and of course for the nature of Tasmania. Spacious 3.5 * against the 4 *.

Oh if there is one reason to see this film, it is the fantastic nature images. Those are great. Furthermore... well...

The story develops somewhat like a mystery. There are the strange circumstances under which Armstrong disappeared and he thought he was being followed. Let Dafoe now also give the reasonable impression that he is being shadowed. For a moment I expect a deeper layer with Armstrong himself, murder, sabotage or that Armstrong might still be alive but no, from halfway up it becomes a bit of a rudderless whole in terms of story. What does emerge is that he has been changed by the contact with Armstrong's wife and children and that he is not carrying out his task but doing 'a good deed' in the proverbial sense of the word. He brought about a change in the family, whether briefly. The story is a bit off the beaten path and a bit out of control.

Seen it once and that's more than enough.
