It's amazing that this is so underrated. I thought this was a very solid thriller, with a very wicked murder story. For starters, I thought the cast was a good start. Sam Worthington from Avatar once again plays his role as Inspector Mike Sounder who teams up with Detective Brian Heigh (also a great part from supporting actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Furthermore, Chloe Moretz, who I have been in love with for a long time, was also very present. If it's not a Hit Girl, it still remains a pretty tough girl who doesn't mince words, and you can already see that in this film.

Well, the whole murder story is also extraordinary, we are now dealing with a kind of missing person story and that the bodies are found in "The Texas Killing Fields" which is legally independent and where no murder cases can/can take place. So the whole mission becomes quite difficult and you have to work through a detour and potential links. Which keeps Brian and Jake on the wrong track. So they come to Anne Sliger (Moretz) who roams around more to escape the home situation that is often accompanied by rough boys, that guy with that Cadillac, etc. etc. The Killing Fields also regularly confuse you as a viewer, but the outcome still well worked out.

And that makes Texas Killing Fields a great thriller for me, with a few nice action moments. The sultry rural settings of Texas also provide the perfectly typical atmosphere that is needed with these kinds of films and the expansion of the whole story and the links you also have to be able to follow, but in the end it remains interesting. Also nice to see that this was directed by Michael Mann's son. As far as I'm concerned, it's a great debut film and I think she can start on a new project (but hey, which director don't I say that to? )

4.0*

A film that could have been (a lot) more, especially with this cast and the atmosphere and background of a society where the 'social and moral fabric' is missing. The acting is good, but that cannot disguise the fact that the scenario was not well constructed in terms of structure and tension. It felt fragmented. There was a loose end at the end. It also appears to have been clipped. There were scenes that raised the expectation that the suspense would really get close to the viewer's skin... Unfortunately. Rating? Somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars. By the way, the director is the daughter of Michael Mann. The film was a huge hit in the cinema. Film was a bit reminiscent of the better 'Cold in July' in this genre. Why it hasn't been shown on a Dutch channel yet is a mystery to me.

Texas Killing Fields will stay with me as a reasonable film with a decent script and beautiful setting. Still, it occasionally lacks some flow and sinks a bit. Not completely convinced of a good film while the ingredients were there, especially considering the cast.
