Berlin 1933. The Nazis are in power in Germany. Jewish tenor Joseph Schmidt's marriage to Brigitte von Hilden is promptly dissolved on the basis of 'racial backgrounds'. The couple therefore moves to Austria. But even there they can only be together for a short time.
