Not so special. It didn't affect me much and the sentiment often didn't feel sincere enough for me. Also, I don't think the boy's friends act very well. Still, the film looked fine, I think the father is a nice character, well played, and I don't find it boring at all. A sufficient one. 3*

I happened to see this Drama film on "Film1" while zapping and then I also watched it and mainly because I saw that Demián Bichir played in it and I can mainly because of his nice role in "Machete Kills (2013)".

In this bittersweet drama about an illegal Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles, the likeable Carlos (Demian Bichir) works long days as a gardener and sleeps on the couch to give his teenage son Luis (José Julián) a better life. The father-son relationship is shaky until they team up to recover Carlo's stolen pickup truck.

A story bigger than the individual parts, about the negative consequences of ego, urge to act and patriarchy, but above all about sacrifice, guilt and trust. Fascinating cross-section of the rapidly growing Latino community in the United States. The more seasoned movie viewer can predict almost the entire movie from the first minute. The twists are pretty standard and the characters go through average development.

The film style is calm and restrained and accurately registers what really matters, namely the acting. Father and son are both doing well and last but not least, they also have a lot of chemistry with each other. You really believe that they are family and have a strong bond.

For the fan of the better drama film, "A Better Life" is one not to be missed. The originality prize may not have been won, but the performances are very strong. And that's what it's all about in a decent drama.

This was another good movie. Luckily I hadn't read anything beforehand, so the surprise was all the greater. The story was captivating and interesting. The cast did just fine. Other than that, the movie looked good.

Thought he was worth seeing.
