Albert is a somewhat melancholic man who gives up his life to lead a freebooty life as a circus director. He has left behind a wife and children, and gets into a relationship with circus artist Anne. She in turn falls in love with a younger actor, who also ridicules Albert. A confrontation is inevitable.
