Snuf de Hond en het Spookslot plot

Tom and Mirjam and Snuf are going to stay for a week with their uncle Hans and their cousin Jaap. Near Uncle Hans's house is a haunted castle. It turns out that there is also a legend attached to this, the legend of Black Bertram, also called the curse of jealousy. A gang of smugglers has settled in the castle. Detective Barninkhof is looking for this gang, which strikes constantly. When Tom sees someone in the haunted castle, nobody seems to believe him. To prove it, Tom decides to investigate alone, along with Snuf. This brings Tom into contact with the dangerous gang of smugglers in the haunted castle.

I attended the premiere of this film today. It's a really fun Dutch film for the whole family. I do find a few scenes in the film a bit weak. The main characters are allowed to "just" walk into the house where a burglary took place that night... At the end of the film, the gang does commit the burglary, even though Tom has escaped and knows what's going on... But... the real lead, Snuf, is fantastic. He wins the "Gouden Bot" award in my opinion.

Mediocre film, but a bit better than Snuf and the Kingfisher, so that's quite something.

While Snuf and the Kingfisher was riddled with illogicalities, this film suffers less from them. It has a more atmospheric feel and even boasts some decent direction at times, with the flashbacks to the past being particularly positive. Unfortunately, the acting in this film is also very poor, with the lead actor's performance, who portrays Tom in a truly dramatic way, being the low point. Otherwise, it's quite watchable, partly because the story is more interesting this time around, although some scenes were a bit too obvious.

The first two parts are still the best, but this one at least comes somewhat close.

2.0*

The young cast members exude fun and sincerity, and the idea is a good one, but directing duo Steven de Jong and Erwin van den Eshof are very emphatically playing by the book. Of course, a film like this has its source material, but the unsensational progression doesn't exactly invite an adaptation. For example, the Haunted Castle receives relatively little attention, and the adult cast members are far too tied to (poorly executed) stereotypes. Children might be particularly bothered by the lack of suspense and the predictable progression, which means the filmmakers guarantee little memorable material for all audiences. Not to mention the film's very poor visual design.
