Although the hand of the master can be recognized here and there in the dialogues, this film is much too ordinary for a Billy Wilder. It's a flat, predictable story with no highs or lows, no surprising twists. The almost endless repetition of Ariane's lovers doesn't do the film any good either.

Additional disturbing factors are the lack of chemistry between Gary Cooper and (the again extremely charming) Audrey Hepburn and the casting of Maurice Chevalier. It is no problem for me that a film in Paris is entirely in English, but to put one actor in between who speaks English with a thick French accent does not appeal to me. Actually, I think the music (Fascination, C'est si bon) is the nicest part of this disappointing film.

Even the lesser Wilders like this one are still great to watch. Very witty at times, Hepburn is fine as always, but especially the missing chemistry between Cooper and Hepburn kills the film. Too bad about the ending too.

Moderate Wilder. The film starts off strong (with a really nice opening shot) but ends up being way too long. The story that is told does not lend itself to it and although both Cooper and the fresh Hepburn play nicely, they have no chemistry with each other. And that's exactly what the whole movie is about. A few nice scenes and it all looks very nice, but it never gets really fun and really funny. 2.5*.
