"They have a plan, but not a clue."
America in the 1930s. Three prisoners manage to escape during forced labour. They plan to retrieve the loot that one of them has hidden. Since the money is hidden in a house that will soon be flooded due to the construction of a new dam, there is a need to hurry. That's not the only difficulty the three face, though.

I often like a movie if I can make up a whole story around it myself through all the seemingly incoherent innuendo. This is one of those.
My take on this movie:
Beautiful images of the southern states, nice and here and there comical story about a few guys who really just escape captivity with their own story and are on the run throughout the movie, with a religious and philosophical touch to it. Honesty and justice live the longest and eventually it comes back to you. I also like contrast with today's society, media is still in its infancy and therefore enormous freedom, but can also be restrictive.

A very fine film by the eldest Coen brother. O Brother, Where art thou is a Coen production through and through. Sometimes their style doesn't work for me, but here it definitely does. Lots of absurd and surreal humor; kind of in line with The Big Lewowski, but a tad more nonsensical (in the right way). Clooney with his hair remedies, The Soggy Bottom Boys, the crazy bank robber who suddenly starts mowing cows, that whole sequence with the Ku Klux Klan, those little bits in between with the governor and his campaign; hilarious, surprising, but above all fresh and original. I was also able to pick up a lot of elements from the Odyssey, which was always fun to do, but a lot of them will have passed me by. The three women as the seductive sirens, John Goodman as the one-eyed cyclops, quest for and reclaim the wife, the oracle in the beginning, etc. Nice and original, such a loose and modern retelling of Homer's epic work.
Visually also a really beautiful film, with very beautiful and bright use of color. Beautiful environments each time from rural South America. Actors also play very well, including every supporting role. I think Clooney in particular plays one of the best roles of his career. Also Nelson with his clumsy head all the time is laughing. Constant nice use of music and songs complements the whole. Downsides for me were that it was difficult to get into it in the first fifteen minutes (but I always have that with every Coens film; their films are always a separate universe) and the somewhat lesser ending. However, the whole middle section, with the actual journey, is fantastic. Thick 4 *, a top 3 Coen as far as I'm concerned!

Again a good addition to the cinema world from the Coen brothers, two directors who make very variable films. Still, most of its career has gone on to be a hit, and they've deservedly earned a status that could potentially make it into the history books of film.
What is striking about the film is that it turned out to be a lot fresher than I had previously thought, especially because the Coen brothers have arranged the film very successfully on the visual level. Filmed with attention to the cinematography, beautiful filters and great locations. Every scene of the film has something unique and I can only praise the film for that.
Moreover, the acting is also very strong, with only a few misses from Clooney, surprisingly enough. He's just a bit too neat for his role and just a bit too slick. He doesn't seem to mind that, though, since he plays his own character and that just doesn't fit in the film very well in my opinion.
Furthermore, the music eventually takes over the film too much and the funny situations in which the characters end up disappear a bit from the picture. The music is quite successful, unfortunately it ends up playing too prominent a factor in the film. The comedy fades a bit, and that is precisely what the film manages to keep up with, together with the directing style.
The freshness of the film is nice, in terms of comedy it's not too brilliant but lighthearted. This movie is easy to watch and doesn't take too long. These are the comedies that I really enjoy. It doesn't take too long, doesn't take too much time, and never gets too serious. It seems to be almost extinct, which is why I can only appreciate it more.
