Mira plot

Modern times are knocking on the door of the conservative hamlet of De Waterhoek. Hard work is being done on a bridge over the Scheldt, but the residents of De Waterhoek are very satisfied with their old ferry and do not want all those novelties at all. Under the leadership of Deken Broeke, the resistance grows, which reaches a low point when his son Lander and three comrades attack the surveyor and his colleagues, causing two of them to drown. Lander does not escape his sentence and it becomes clear to De Waterhoek that there is no going back. We see how the free girl Mira hooks up with engineer Maurice Rondeau, who is in charge of building the bridge. Other members of the close-knit community are also changing their attitudes towards progress. Sieper, a son-in-law of Broeke, even arranges fifty workers for the construction. Based on Stijn Streuvels' novel The Disappointment of the Waterhoek.

Nice film in which the residents of the Waterhoek do not agree if a bridge is built. A rural drama in which the story lacks some focus and where some characters could have been developed a bit better (the short running time is also a disadvantage here). It all looks good with a good decoration and great camera work.

The story of Stijn Streuvels about the disappointment of De Waterhoek. The story is reminiscent of the whole discussion in Antwerp around the Oosterweel, in which for years people have been arguing for a bridge over the Scheldt with the necessary protests. At Mira we go 100 years back in time, where a smaller bridge causes a shock in a small village.

At first I wondered why the film is actually called Mira, if the main story is actually that battle between village and city over a new bridge. But I think Mira symbolizes the discord between the two. To the villagers, she is a strange girl with influences from the big city. For the wealthier townspeople, she is a cheerful farmer's daughter who deviates from the rules of high society. Lovingly embraced by both parties and at the same time denounced. The resistance leader Lander and engineer Maurice symbolize both sides.

The film takes some getting used to because of the mix of Flemish and Dutch and the rather brushed-down Dutch they speak. In 1971, Flanders is still far from a film country, but you have to point out that some images are very beautiful. The scenes in the woods are beautifully done and the misty scenes on the water provide atmospheric tension. Partly outdated film, but quite well filmed.

Oof.

Not my thing. Screaming and dated peasant drama. Mira - the whore! - flutters around - whether that's with family or not, she (and those relatives) doesn't care much. This against the background of a social drama, which could have been resolved if not every character was screaming theatrically. But then we wouldn't have a movie. In the end you almost forget that Mira has undergone some kind of personal development - that too. I couldn't do much with it anyway.
