Mira plot
Modern times are knocking on the door of the conservative hamlet of De Waterhoek. Hard work is being done on a bridge over the Scheldt, but the residents of De Waterhoek are very satisfied with their old ferry and do not want all those novelties at all. Under the leadership of Deken Broeke, the resistance grows, which reaches a low point when his son Lander and three comrades attack the surveyor and his colleagues, causing two of them to drown. Lander does not escape his sentence and it becomes clear to De Waterhoek that there is no going back. We see how the free girl Mira hooks up with engineer Maurice Rondeau, who is in charge of building the bridge. Other members of the close-knit community are also changing their attitudes towards progress. Sieper, a son-in-law of Broeke, even arranges fifty workers for the construction. Based on Stijn Streuvels' novel The Disappointment of the Waterhoek.
