A difficult film to write an opinion about.

An unusual film anyway - almost no dialogue at all, and hardly any spoken word. We also learn very little about the protagonist - only some dream images that reveal who he is and where he comes from. It's really just because his opponents are even more unsympathetic, or because the story is already so implausible - and quite controversial, that you start to wonder how it will turn out for him. But whether that unusualness makes it a good film, I wonder - and even after a few weeks of settling in, I still don't have a clear answer.

Whether Vincent Gallo plays a good role is an equally difficult question. At least not an ordinary one.

“How an action film becomes a poetic cinematic masterpiece.”

I have been looking forward to this film for several years. As often, I read some opinions with great caution to avoid spoilers as much as possible. The film starts off quite ordinary for the theme: fixed ingredients like helicopters, Americans in the desert, djalabas, Taliban fighter fly through the screen. If you're impatient, restless, and don't have time for impressions of the protagonist's suffering, you'll probably turn off the movie after half an hour. If you don't, it will be quite a unique experience. The most peculiar, but also genius, I found that the film starts with some lame talk, but finally ends in bitter seriousness.

Partly in view of this contradiction, I began to wonder what is meant by the film. Yet the experience of the beautiful images and the music during the film mainly demands attention. Only afterwards did I get the feeling (again) to reason with what I had seen. A political judgment? The film portrays so much humanity that you simply cannot afford to make a political judgment from the maker, I conclude. Unlike the usual stories about terrorists, the film focuses much more on emotions: pain, hopeless desire and leaves the viewer in despair.
