James Whale is best known for his early horror films, which always contain a human element. But he made more films, especially in the early 1930s. I recently saw the beautiful original *Waterloo Bridge*. Now, this film, which is stylistically exuberant here and there and foreshadows some noirish themes as well as traces of Whale's horror films, particularly in the sets. Whale was delightfully stylish. Whale was a gay man, and there is clearly some gay innuendo in this film that cannot be accidental. The assistant Hilda is the clearest example. The story is primarily a moral play that betrays a theatrical origin, but the details elevate this film.
