Quite enjoyable intrigue and acts by the protagonists, in a film that says farewell too abruptly.

Of course there is the classic homage to the American resident : one honest, correct and generous, the other, although on the wrong track, nevertheless with a good disposition.

San Quentin Prison had previously only been known to me from the legendary concert record Johnny Cash would make a few decades later, and it soon became clear to me that this film lacked the qualities to make a lasting impression.

Typical that this prison drama was produced by Warner Bros. And it is to their credit that they made the effort to (partly) film on location in the infamous prison, which does give a kind of authentic feel.

For me, the big plus points about this movie are the beginning and the end. The beginning contains some dialogues between Pat O'Brien and Ann Sheridan at screwball level (afterwards the tone changes to serious) and in the finale we see a spectacular chase of bandits and police. Between the beginning and the end we see a prison drama that, however, seems a bit too casual to me. The urgency is lacking in the acting performances. Humphrey Bogart is not doing bad, but not more than that.

The romance between Ann Sheridan and Pat O'Brien within the walls does not contribute to an authentic prison feeling either.

Because of the beginning and the end, this film just succeeded and I also always enjoy seeing a Bogart with his striking head at work. But measured by the intensity of the masterpiece I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang that Warner Bros. prepared a few years earlier, this prison drama is not yet touching his ankles. And it is rather a pleasant snack. Over to Johnny Cash

San quentin is a reasonable prison film with a single fascinating side plot : namely the fact that the new chief is in love with the sister of one of his new prisoners .

Too little is actually done with that plot, the film is a bit too short for that, yet the film is fascinating enough to sit through the full 70 minutes, Bogart does well as a brand new prisoner and O'brien also does a great job as a former soldier who can prove his methods as a chief .
