Robert Redford's free adaptation of Norman Macleane's novella has become a kind of visual hymn in which the serenity of untouched natural beauty is once again central, as is usual when Redford directs. And in this he subtly places a few characters (we see a then still relatively unknown Brad Pitt in a leading role) and he works out a modest dramatic storyline. Passed at times.

Nice and leisurely chronicle about two brothers who grow up in the town of Missoula, Montana with their parents. Other than the things of life, not much happens in this Norman McLean's autobiographical memoir. McLean looks back on memories of simple joy and fulfillment in life. His close relationship with his somewhat empty-headed brother Paul is central and both are linked by the art of fly fishing, which was taught to them by their father. Yet you sense that a dramatic turn is yet to come to shake up this carefree existence.

Fly-fishing, his girlfriend Jessie, his faithful father, Jessie's jerky brother. Pitt and Sheffer play sympathetic roles in a film that immerses me in a dreamy laidback atmosphere, partly thanks to the beautiful images of Rousselot. A film that at certain moments filled me with longing for my childhood. Pleasantly surprised.

Nice movie. I have nothing to do with fishing, but I thought the fly fishing looked beautiful and calming and the story captivated me. I liked the atmosphere and the characters quite interesting. Well filmed and played. A 7! 3.5*
