For the Love of Mary plot
Mary Peppertree, a White House operator, is courted by three men: Philip Manning, a lawyer, Marine Lieutenant Tom Farrington, and David Paxton, whose father owns an island in the Pacific. When the navy negotiates to buy the island to establish a base there, David agrees on two conditions: that Philip be appointed a judge on a court at least 2,500 miles outside of Washington and that Lieutenant Farrington be assigned a mission at sea.
