The whole time I was thinking about Lustig's work from 1980. It turned out to be Maniac Cop from 1988 after all.

Wonderful film of the so-called video nasty affair. A simple story: New York is ravaged by a maniacal cop who simply takes pleasure in killing people. So it seems. However, I expected better, but as a horror film with some old-fashioned action elements, this comes through very well. Lustig also shows his obvious love for New York and the murders that are portrayed do not lie. And this Maniac Cop always manages to get away with it, leaving others suspected of being a murderer... Including Officer Jack Forrest... who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Typically eighties. Throw some elements with psychopaths, psychological elements, brutal murders and possible firefights in the blender and you get this cinema for little money. Amusing from start to finish and the angular acting doesn't stand out either.
And in the end, the Maniac Cop himself is also just a damaged man. Indoctrinated by his sweet mother or is it different?

Great entertainment. I just missed the VHS tracks.

4.5*

Wonderfully wrong slasher from start to finish. Delightfully simple and predictable entertainment. Beautiful image quality on the Arrow Blu-ray disc.

A cult film that's not good, but actually not bad either. It all looks smooth and a lot is happening. The film is full of action moments and a lot of kills, unfortunately they are simple and often too tame.

It is striking that the story is quite nice in which the main character at a certain moment is surprisingly seen as the perpetrator and is arrested. Tom Atkins plays a convincing role who wants to expose the maniac cop at all costs. Towards the end, the whole is worked out a bit too simply and the final scene comes across as a bit weak. 6/10
